I am home!Well I finally made it home about a week and a half ago. After about 24 hours of traveling, I was back home in Salt Lake. Luckily I didn't get sick at all this time! It was really fun to see my family again and the next day after I got home, we drove ALL THEY WAY to California to visit my family there. It was nice to see them, but I had a hard time with the time change and everything. I kept waking up everyday at 4:30 or 5:30 am! I finally adjusted and now I'm back in Utah. It's good to be home, and it's funny how I notice different things. I have been sharing the stroopwaffels and everyone loves them! I miss Holland but it's good to be home. My experience over the past 5 months has been unforgettable. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to go to Holland and travel around Europe and I know that I will never forget it! Now I just have to plan my next trip back! Thanks for reading my blog everyone!Haleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00684875548624576633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33413243.post-40472710067766366352007-02-07T10:10:00.000-08:002007-02-07T11:05:03.714-08:00Volendam, NetherlandsChris and I went to this really cute town called Volendam last week. It was so much fun! We were supposed to go two weeks ago, but there was a massive storm and the trains shut down and everything. But when we did go, the weather was magnificent! There were a lot of cute little shops and we got dressed up in Dutch clothes and got our picture taken with this cute backdrop! It was awesome!
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5028869321298383794" style="DISPLAY: block; I can't believe how fast time flies! It seems like just barely when I was planning and counting down the days until I came, and now I'm almost done! But it has been fun and I'm ready to come home. So last weekend, I went to Zeddam, Netherlands with my project group for school. We are doing a project on the law firm of Tim's (guy in my group) dad and we had to go there this weekend to interview the staff. We stayed at Tim's house and it was awesome. It was huge and so nice and in a cute little Dutch village in the south of Holland. We went for a walk in the center of the town and we walked around this big castle and it was really nice.
Tim's house in Zeddam, Netherlands.
This is the pool. (Happy New Year)

The holidays have been really nice. I had 2 weeks off of school and even though I don't go to school that much to being with, it was still nice to have a break...haha. But Christmas was really nice even though I was far away from home. The day after Christmas, me and Chris and Meredith drove to Paris for 4 days. New Year's was insane here in Groningen. They do billions of fireworks here and all of them would be illegal in Utah! It was madness everywhere with fireworks all over the place! I was actually a little afraid for my life. But it was fun. Here are some pics from the past few weeks.Me making cookies!Me and Meredith on Christmas Eve at Chris's house with his family and the missionaries.De Zendelingen! Paris is a beautiful city and I really loved it. I was pleasantly surprised with the Parisians. Before going, we had heard so many awful things about the French people and especially people in Paris. They are very proud and refuse to speak English and basically just really rude. Although we did encounter some rude people (when asked if he spoke English, the first man we talked to said in English, "I speak French"!), we also talked to some really nice people. We also met some crazy French guys that Meredith knew so they took us all around Paris and entertained us for 2 days. It was really fun to have French tour guides! Me behind the wheel of our tiny little Euro car! We drove and parked outside the city then rode the metros around the city. It worked out really well.
This was the view from our hostel window! And even more expensive to live in Europe!Well, I went to Italy this week and it was pretty great. Except that I got my camera stolen in Naples! AHHHHH!!!! It was awful and I don't even know when or how it happened or who took it. It happened sometime between the train and the bus in Naples, but I just noticed it was gone! It is so upsetting because we had taken tons of pictures of Rome and Meredith didn't even have a camera! And now I have to buy a new camera! Geez. So now I don't have any pictures to show from our trip :( But the trip was still fun. We went to Rome for the first 2 days and saw all the tourist stuff-the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, and all the ruins. Then we went to Naples and wandered around there, but it was a pretty shady place. I wouldn't recommend it. There were a lot of scary people there and it's a super dirty city. But the city center is really nice. We also went to Pompeii and saw Mt. Vesuvius and all the ruins of Pompeii. That was really awesome. Then we went back to Rome for one more day and went to Vatican City and saw St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel and stuff. We didn't get to go in the Sistine Chapel though because they closed at noon! So that was disappointing. But we had a really good time despite the camera and the weather was nice and now this is just an excuse for me to have to come back to Rome!!! Here are a few pictures I got off the internet of the places I saw. This is the Pantheon and it was awesome and huge. Raphael (the artist) was buried there! This is the Roman Forum and the ruins in the middle of the city. This is the monument to Victor Emmanuel II and it's also the tomb of the unknown soldier. It was sooo huge, I couldn't believe it. We climbed all the way up the steps and could see the Colosseum and a lot of the city. This is what our hostel looked like in Rome. It was really nice and a lot of fun. This is the Trevi Fountain and it was absolutely beauitful and gigantic. The legend is that if you throw a coin into the fountain, you will ensure your return to Rome. I hope so!Inside the Colosseum. It was amazing to think that this was so old but still HUGE.The Roman Colosseum. It was pretty rad to actually see it in person. This is one of the arches of columns at the entrance to Vatican City. It's part of St. Peter's Basilica. It was amazingly beautiful. These are the famous Swiss guards outside St. Peter's Basilica. I'm not really sure how come they dress so funny. This is the view from on top of St. Peter's Basilica. We climbed all the way up millions of tiny winding stairs to the top of the dome. It was a really awesome view. This is St. Peter's Basilica. I can't even describe how beautiful it was. It blew my mind. St. Peter was buried there, as well as several popes and we also saw Michelangelo's "Pieta". Awesome. These are some of the ruins of Pompeii.

The ruins of Pompeii with Mt. It was only about an hour and a half bus ride from Groningen and it was a lot of fun. It felt much more like Christmas and luckily it was a beautiful day with no rain! We wandered in all the shops and around the market all day. We ate tons of food (I had some German sausage!), and delicious treats and then came back Saturday night. It was really tons of fun and I'm glad that we went! They were playing Christmas music in the middle of all the busy people doing Christmas shopping. People enjoying their hot wine or hot chocolate at one of the little shops in the Christmas market.
The market at night with all the lights. Things are going good here and I have less than 2 months left! CRAZY! I still have a lot trips to plan and places to go though! We are going to Paris, Berlin, Prague, and Rome! I can't wait! School is okay, but I don't really like it that much...it's school! But the weather has been nice the past few days, so I'm just enjoying it and praying that it will last! I hate riding my bike in the rain and wind so much! I just love my car and I appreciate it so much more now! But everything else is good and I am happy and enjoying Europe. I'm sure before I know it, I will be back home again! It's a little sad that I'm missing the holidays and I was pretty homesick on Thanksgiving because they don't do anything here, but it's okay, I'll be home next year! The Hague temple! I went with the ward on Saturday and it was beautiful. It was small, but very nice and I'm really glad that I got to go. Me in front of the temple.

This is Meredith from USU. On Saturday, they had a huge party in Groningen when Sinterklaas came to the city. The story says that he sails to the Netherlands from Spain and his helpers are called “Black Petes. So when he comes to the city, he comes on a boat in the canals and all his helpers are running around and stuff. So sat he came to Groningen, and we went and watched the boat procession. It was so fun and awesome and all the little kids were dressed up like “Black Petes. I loved it! Then later, there was a big parade in the city and Sinterklaas came in on his white horse! It was great! This is a cute little boy who was dressed up like a black pete! This is the parade in the city before Sinterklaas came.
Black Petes handing out candy to kids.
Sinterklaas on his white horse coming into the city.
There was an elephant in the procession! I was so dang excited about it, and we had a lot of fun. I can't believe how fast time goes, and she's already been here and gone already! It's nuts. But she spent a few days with me here in Groningen and then we went to London for a few days and then spent one day in Amsterdam. It was a short trip, but still good. We had some fun adventures and it all started when we missed our flight to London! Looking back we can laugh about it and call it an adventure, but while it was happening, it was more like a nightmare! We had to be at the airport to check in at least 40 minutes before our flight left and we got a ride to the airport. But we hit a ton of traffic and by the time we got there, the check in had closed and there was nothing we could do! We were devastated and both of us were bawling and it was awful. It was also my birthday! But then we ended up going to Brussels, Belgium and going to London on the Chunnel! It cost more money, but I just put it on the credit card and we got to London! At our hostel, they didn't have my reservations! Perfect. But it was okay because they had extra rooms and the hostel was really nice. Once we got everything taken care of, the day turned out really well and we went and saw STOMP and had dinner. So overall, I had a good birthday! We saw all the tourist sights and even though it was freezing, it was sunny and really pretty. Having Steph here was awesome and I'm so glad that she got to come and we could have fun together. After she left, I felt homesick and I really missed her! But we had a lot of fun. Here we are at the bus stop in Groningen. We were on our way to London.
This kind of explains how we were feeling after everything that had happened. At this point we were finally going to London, but it had been a stressful morning.

This was a cool sign I saw by the London Bridge. (Which isn't so cool by the way, it's just a plain bridge. It's pink at night which is kinda cool, but the Tower Bridge is much better!)
Another crazy pic of us being weird. We went to Harrod's and looked at all the super expensive name-brand clothes that we couldn't afford. It was fun.
This is us with the Tower Bridge in the background. We went on the eye and it was awesome! We could see the entire city and it was such a clear day so we got some good pictures.
Steph and I on the London Eye.
This what we were sitting in on the Eye.
The views from the Eye.
Buckingham Palace at the Changing of the Guards. We went to the Anne Frank House and it was pouring rain and really cold while we were waiting in line. But as soon as we got inside it cleared up (of course)! The Anne Frank House was really cool and it was awesome to see her original diary and where her family hid out for so long.We went to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Amsterdam and it was nuts. It was very interesting and nobody worry, it's not dangerous and we were there at like 6pm! But it was crazy and we weren't supposed to take pictures, so I just took this one of the Hash Marijuana Hemp Museum.Me inside a giant wooden shoe!
I love Holland!Haleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00684875548624576633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33413243.post-1162833299976341642006-11-06T09:06:00.000-08:002006-11-07T04:56:20.473-08:00More AdventuresOkay, so after I got back from Italy, I stayed in Amsterdam and the Hague for two days until my sister came! I went to a place called Madurodam in the Hague and it was really cool! It had all the main places in the Netherlands in miniature! It was pretty sweet. Then Steph came and it was so great! She stayed with me in Groningen for a few days, then we went to London and Amsterdam. I was really really tired, so my eyes are a little droopy. But it was still fun! This is Madurodam. Here is me and Steph! Steph bought some new European clothes so she's looking pretty stylish! One of the many teeny tiny cars they have in Europe and especially the Netherlands.
We took about a million pictures like this. Wow, I can't even tell you, but it was so beautiful and I really hope I get the chance to go back there someday especially in the summer because it's awesome. It was definitely the highlight of my trip and my favorite place. It was so beautiful and warm and there were hardly any tourists! I loved it! Cinque Terre is 5 tiny villages along the Italian Riviera. They have really awesome hiking between the villages, but it had rained before we came, so they were closed because of landslides. I was really disappointed, but we just took the trains to each city and wandered around. It was so relaxing and the views were beautiful. The ocean was clear and warm and the last day it was like 85 degrees! I felt like I was in Hawaii or something. And there were hardly any tourists so that was really nice. Me on the beach in Cinque Terre. There were huge hills all around us covered in grapevines and the people there make wine. This is our hostel in Manarola. It was really beautiful there. We went and saw some really awesome cathedrals and bridges and just wandered around the city. We went to the Academia Gallery which has the statue of David. It was awesome and there was also a lot of other really cool and old art. The weather was great and it was very warm and sunny most of the time. We hiked up this big hill to the Piazza de Michelangelo that overlooked the entire city and it was amazing. Our hostel was also really nice and in a great location! We stopped at Pisa for a few hours before going on to Cinque Terre and it was cool. There's not much to see there except for the Leaning Tower, but that was awesome. Overall, we had a good time in Florence and Pisa. Me at the Piazza de Michelangelo.

Me on a bridge in Florence, I forget the name...

They have masks all over mostly in Venice, and Deema and I bought some! Well here are the pictures I promised! I have been running around Europe for the past few weeks, but now I'm back "home" in Groningen and it's really nice to be back! I need to just chill here for a bit before going on any more adventures! But I had a really good time in Italy. We flew into Milan and stayed there for a few hours, then went to Venice for a day. It was great! I had heard that Venice was really dirty and the water was gross and stuff, but I liked it! It was so cool to see the canals everywhere, and we got to go on a gondola ride! It was great. Here is me and Deema at the beginning of our trip. This is in Venice outside our hostel/guest house. It was really nice and I was pleasantly surprised with all of our hostels in Italy, they were great! The guy is Nicholaus and he is a random Frenchman we met on our train. He was just traveling around Europe with no agenda, so we hung out with him that night.Me and Allison and Deema outside the train station in Venice. We walked outside and pretty much freaked out because it was so awesome! We were running around like crazy people and it was really neat to see the huge canal and old buildings all around us. This is one of the many small canals in Venice.
Here I am on the bridge over the canal. They took us all around the city and to dinner for a few hours, then we got back on the train and went to Florence. It was a really fun night.Haleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00684875548624576633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33413243.post-1161018213635580882006-10-16T09:52:00.000-07:002006-10-16T10:30:28.390-07:00Hey everyone! Sorry I haven’t written or posted pictures for a while, I’ve just been really busy and it takes a long time. But here are some for you. Everything is still excelente here in Holland and I’m still loving it. The weather has been relatively nice and it’s still pretty warm. There have been some super rainy days and it’s cloudy a lot, but still pretty nice. Overall, everything is grand. I went to Amsterdam this weekend and it was kind of nightmare. Actually, it was good and bad (the good was really good, and the bad was pretty terrible). I went with a group of international students and we rode the bus. I got really super sick and barfed (sorry to be so graphic, but it’s true). Don’t worry because I did it in a bag, so at least I didn’t barf all over the bus right? But first went to a “typically Dutch” village called Zaanse Schaans. It was really nice and super cute. There were plenty of windmills and cheese and all that. But I wasn’t exactly feeling my best, so I didn’t take a ton of pictures. After that we went into Amsterdam and it was quite an adventure because our German bus didn’t know how to speak English or Dutch! And he didn’t know how to get to Amsterdam or where to park or anything. It was unbelievable. So we drove all around the city looking for a place to park and I was getting sick all over again and the bus driver was screaming things in German and it was just a treat. I didn’t do much in Amsterdam because I wasn’t feeling well, but it was still nice and I’m going back at least twice, so I wasn’t too worried about missing things. This week I also had an adventure with the missionaries. We went to go buy bikes because I have to give mine back to the girl who let me borrow it and one of the missionaries got his bike stolen! So we went and stood in line, and then there weren’t any bikes, so we went back to the bus stop and the next bus didn’t come for like 3 hours! And we were very far from the city. So we started walking and Elder Greenburg had things to do and places to be and he was getting desperate, so he started to stick out his thumb and straight-up hitchhike! It was insane. And after only a few minutes, a guy pulled over and we hopped in! He was from Uzbekistan (really) and didn’t speak much. But he was nice and gave us a ride to another bus stop. So that was my hitchhiking adventure with the missionaries in Europe! School is good here, and I’ve really been working hard because I realized how much schoolwork I really have to do and I want to get it all done because I’m going to Italy next week (yay!) and then my sister is coming in two weeks (YAY YAY!). But it’s still good and I’m enjoying myself. I can’t believe how fast time goes, and I’ve already been here for 6 weeks already! Crazy! But I’ll have some sweet pictures for you all as soon as I get back from Italy so prepare yourselves! Haha, I’ll write soon! We had a “vla” party on Monday night! Vla is a delicious mix between yogurt and pudding. They have millions of flavors and Santiago (far right) wanted to celebrate because he got a new computer, so we had a vla party and everyone shared their vla and I ate a lot of it. I kinda got sick though…
This is all our vla lined up! There was rum, chocolate, fruit, caramel, pear, banana, vanilla, and strawberry! YUM!
This is the view from the canal boat trip.
This is a big pirate ship that we saw from the boat. But here is a bunch for you all! But I went to Brussels, Belgium this weekend and it was really fun! It was a great city and really old. It is the capital of the European Union and a huge city. We saw a lot of really old (but really beautiful) cathedrals and we just wandered the streets enjoying everything. We went there and visited an American woman who lives there so she was our tour guide. We ate Belgian waffles, bought Belgian chocolate and lookes at the main sights. Brussels was a nice city and I'm really glad that I got to go! I have a lot more trips planned for the next few weeks-Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Milan-Florence-Pisa-Cinque Terra-Bologna, and then my sister is coming (YAY!) and we're going to London or Paris! There are just so many places that I want to go and things I want to see, so I'm trying to do as much as I can while I'm here because I love it! And there are people from school and my apartment who also want to travel, so it's a lot of fun to go! School is still okay, but I'm not too worried about it. And everything else is good. The weather got really super crappy here and now apparantly it's back to normal Holland weather which is downpours and hurricane-force winds. I'm not even kidding, it's insane. And it's just the most fun of adventures to ride me bike 8 miles to school and back in that weather. I love it. But I'm doing well and loving it here and everything is great! I hope you enjoy my pictures! Doei!
This is a cute old man who was playing and singing on the street. Tons of people were watching and he was so lively and happy and a really good singer! Translated it means something like, "boy peeing"'. This is a famous tourist attraction in Brussels and there were tons of people there taking pictures and stuff. It's basically just a fountain with a boy peeing, but it's really funny and if you go to Brussels, you have to see it.
Funny huh?
Me in front of the manneken piss. On Friday, I didn't have classes, and I was going to go to a town called Pieterburen with my American friend, but she woke up in the morning with a fever and was sick, do we ended up going on Saturday. Friday I just relaxed and then went to the market with a friend. It's so great because there is a food market and then a clothes/random market. The food market is also amazing because there is just TONS of frsh fruits, vegetables, all kinds od meats, cheeses, chocolate, fish, and anything else you can imagine. I bought some fresh food and then Allison and I made dinner together that night. Later that night, at my student house, it was "international cooking night", and most people made food from their home countries. It was awesome, and tons of people made food, and everyone was just eating and talking and I tried pretty much everything. Most things were really good! Saturday I went to Pieterburen with Allison and it was nice. It's just a town right by the North Sea. They have a seal sanctuary there, so we saw the seals and just wandered around. We also wanted to do the "wadlopen" which is "mud-walking". Apparantly it's famous in Holland, but we didn't plan well enough, so we're going to go back in two weeks and do the mud-walking on the North Sea with a guide and everything. It should be fun! But everything is still good here, and I'm enjoying myself. I'm trying to plan some traveling trips with people, and my classes are okay. School is school, no matter where you are! And the language is still hard and I don't understand anything! But everyone is really nice and helps a lot. The excitement of everything is starting to wear off and I'm a little homesick! But I still love it and I'm happy! Enjoy the pictures! Doei! This is me in a pretty garden we went to in Pieterburen.
This is another really old church. They are great people and it's awesome to meet people from so many different places!Haleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00684875548624576633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33413243.post-1158960789292406892006-09-22T14:28:00.000-07:002006-09-22T14:35:44.136-07:00I'm famous! Well, kind of.....So the past few days, I have had several people I don't know (and some I do) come up to me and tell me that they liked my blog! I was so confused about how people knew about it, because it's not like it's really easy to find! And I finally found out today that I am famous once again! Apparantly, the local newspaper (de HANZE) wrote an article about some international students who were updating their family and firends at home through blogs. They found my blog (along with a few others writing from Groningen) and wrote about it in their article. They also put some up some pictures from my blog, and a link to my website! So now it all makes sense, and at the moment, I am currently being featured in TWO newspapers in Groningen. I'M FAMOUS! Haha, not really, but it's still exciting. So for all of you who aren't my family and friends (and for my family and friends as well!), I hope that you enjoy my blog and my pictures and everything, and please feel free to leave me comments because I love to read what you have to say! Doei!Haleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00684875548624576633noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33413243.post-1158858792782960982006-09-21T09:52:00.000-07:002006-09-22T14:25:35.580-07:00Friday, September 22, 2006

Ok so all is good in Groningen and (as far as I know) Holland! The weather has been fantastic here and it's almost always sunny and warm! I kind of hate the humidity, but I love the sun! Everyone says it's not normal at all, but I like it! Anyway, last weekend I went to a town called Apeldoorn. We played "laser game" (laser tag) with the church people there and it was fun. Afterwards we had a bbq and we stayed the night. It was a fun weekend and next weekend I'm really excited because I'm going to Brussels, Belgium! So that should be fun fun! What else? classes are still good. I don't think they will be too hard and I have a group paper I have to write with some Dutch students. Oh yes! And for everyone at home that doesn't already know, I'm going to stay here in Groningen a little longer than I originally planned! I was going to leave here early and go up to USU late, but now I'm going to stay here and finish my classes and miss spring semester in Logan. I'm going to go home and work and save money (cuz I'll probably be broke!) and then take summer classes either in Logan or online or through the extension in Salt Lake or something. Kind of crazy and sad because I love Logan but I'll be back in the summer or for sure next fall, and I think that it's worth it to stay here and enjoy it. It's a really great experience and so I want to stay! But I guess that's about all and I finally took some pictures of people so I hope you like them! Doei! Here I am at the "Hornseplaas". Not sure how to spell it, but it was a beautiful lake with trees and ducks and everything.
So this is interesting. I got asked to cook an "American" dish for some boys who write for the school paper. Every week they have an international student cook and then they write about it! So I made old fashioned hamburgers and jello-o! It was really fun and surprisingly good and this is the article from the paper! I don't think you can see it, but I'll try to find it on the internet and attach the link. But now I'm famous all over campus and Groningen! (ya right...)
Updeated picture of my room! It's definitely different from at home, but it's good. I have classes with regular Dutch students so that is fun. Luckily everything is in English! We have to do a lot of group work so I have been able to meet people from around here. On my first day in one of my classes, the professor was talking about his rules and he said "I usually only have problems with the guys on this rule, but today it's a girl." And he looked right at me, and everyone looked at me! It was because I was wearing a hat! He won't let us have hats in class! LAME! I was really embarrassed and he made me take it off right then! Ugh, so that was annoying, but everything else seems good. I met a guy that is coming to USU for spring semester as an exchange student in one of my classes! It was so exciting and I have been telling him all about Logan and USU and Salt Lake and everything. It was fun. Anyway, things are still fabulous here in Holland. The weather has been scorching, but really pretty. Everyone said it's never this hot or sunny, but I am dying with the humidity and everything! I didn't bring any kind of summer clothes, so I have just been dying of heat all the time. But I'm sure it will get cold soon and I'll wish it was hot. That's about all for now, but Ill try to get more pictures with people in them! Doei!
This is a garden that we went to in the city. I officially start classes on Monday and I'm really excited! I went to IKEA last night with Sarah, an American in my ward who married a Dutch guy and lives here now. She is so awesome and we had a good time. But IKEA is quite the place. It was amazing. It was ginormous and had everything you could possibly imagine you could need for home decorating. They had the coolest stuff and it was all so cheap! I bought a bunch of sweet stuff for my room and now my room is much cuter and I like it a lot now! I guess we're getting an IKEA in Draper soon, but I"m not sure if it will be so cheap, because it's a Swedish company so they have to import everything. Anyway, it's an awesome store and it's really big over here. Everyone shops at IKEA and it's definitely worth it. Not much else to report, but I am happy and loving Groningen. I am starting to think about making some travel plans, but I think I'll wait until I get settled in a little more and see what happens then. But I'll update again soon! Doei! Here I am with my stylish European scarf Yes, I did take a picture of myself....but everyone wears them here and they sell them everywhere, so I had to get a few for myself!
The view of the Grote Markt from the steps of the town hall.
These are some people in the middle of the Grote Markt and they were doing some sort of religious revivial thing. They were singing and acting out being drunk and then being saved by the group. It was kinda weird and kinda cool.
Here is me with the Grote Markt and the Martini Tower in the background. The Martini Tower and the market below.
This is an organ in one of the cathedrals in the city. Today was Monuments Day, so all the churches and monuments were open and free around the city. Usually you can't even go in them at all, so it was cool to see inside them!
I liked this picture I took of some vases I bought at IKEA and flowers that match the vases! They sell flowers everywhere here for cheap, and I have vases around my room with flowers in them, I love it!
A few days ago I was browsing the market and there was a lot of excitment going on outside the town hall. So I asked around and found out that the Princess Maxima was coming to the town hall! Everyone was so excited and many people her have never even seen her before. So I waited for a few minutes, and she pulled up and got out. People were clapping and cheering and it was very exciting. There were videocameras and photographers everywhere. My Dutch friends were jealous that I've seen her and they never have!
This is Maxima getting out the her car and the people and press everywhere.Haleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00684875548624576633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33413243.post-1157549255292603302006-09-06T06:06:00.000-07:002006-09-07T13:41:00.270-07:00Wednesday, September 6, 2006

Well things have been great so far. I am having the greatest time here in Groningen, and I really love it! The people are so nice, and I'm so happy that I have the church here! I went to church on Sunday and as soon as I walked in, a lady greeted me and introduced me to everyone. They were so excited to have me and everyone spoke at least a little English. The missionaries are awesome, and they're both American, from California and Georgia. They translated for me, so that was nice. After church, all the young adults ate together at the church and I liked everything we had, it was good! Then they invited me to one of their houses to play RISK. It was so much fun, but very interesting because I didn't know how to play the game, and they all were speaking Dutch and the game was in Dutch and everything! But they explained nicely in English and I figured it out. It was a lot of fun. I think I will probably learn some Dutch while I'm here because I'm around it a lot with the church people and everywhere, and I'm also taking a Dutch class for exchange students! Yay.
At church I met this boy named Chris. He is a dutch guy and he went on his mission to London, so he speaks good English. He has been my lifesaver and helped me so much! He has taken me on bike rides and shown me the city and how to get to class and answered my questions. He even got me a cell phone! Last night, we went bowling with the missionaries for their p-day then went over to another couples house and had dinner and watched a movie. It was a lot of fun, and I'm so glad that I have made friend here and everyone in the ward is so wonderful.
Classes don't really start until next week, but this week we have been having orienation and we're working on a group project with other international students. We had to make a cookbook with recipes from all of the countries in our group. There are 16 group members and 9 different countries, so the cookbook is pretty cool. We also have to give a presentation tomorrow and I'm in charge of that part, so it should be fun! Everyone thinks I'm in charge or something because I have the best English so it's kind of weird! But they are all nice. It's crazy because sometimes I feel like a retard because I only know one language and most people know several, but I'm really glad that the language I do know is a good one and all my classes and everything is in the language I know really well! A lot of people can't even really speak English, and classes are in English! It will be rough for them so I'm glad!
But I guess that's the latest, I will update some more soon and try to get more pictures with people in them. I have made some friends, but I just didn't take any pictures with them yet! Doei! (That's bye in Dutch)

This is my on my rad pink bike looking like an American in my hat and jeans! I seriously ride my bike EVERYWHERE! At least 10 miles a day! I love it!
I found some frosted flakes! I got to sleep in and then I got up and rode my bike to do some errands. I was so proud of myself because I found all the things I needed and for good prices too! And then I went on a long bike ride through some of the city. I found the Central Station (I only got lost twice), and then I went to the city center/Grote Markt which is where I was yesterday. It was so chaotic and so much more people than yesterday which is crazy! But it was awesome and I just love the atmosphere here-it's great! So I was pretty much on my bike the whole day (I need to take a picture of myself on my bike!), and it was super fun! So tomorrow I go to church and I can't wait!
These are some pictures I took of things I saw on my bicycle ride around the city. This is pretty much what it looks like everywhere.
There is a canal which circles the city. I slept well last night and got up today and went to an oriention for international students. I met some cool people today: Gaby from Germany and Alison from Arizona. Alison is way cool and I was so happy to meet someone else from the U.S.! We are the only ones in our program from America, and most people don't speak much English at all! But it was fun and afterwards, Alison and I went to the Grote Markt, or city center/market. It was amazing and just like pictures and movies I have seen! It was so busy and chaotic and there were people everywhere walking, on bikes or driving. There was a huge open market with food and clothes and everything! I just wandered around all the little streets for a long time. I also bought a much needed towel and hairdryer! I came back this evening and just relaxed for a bit. Then I took my sweet bike for a spin and found the church and just rode around my neighborhood. It was great; a good day and much better than yesterday!
Haleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00684875548624576633noreply@blogger.com0
